AWG24 is 0.088ohms/metre, AWG18 is 0.022ohms/metre. Thicker wire, less resistance, bigger magnetic field. Thinner wire, more resistance, higher frequency. Start with 200-300 turns of AWG24 on a 10mm iron (or similar) core, around 40mm long. That will get you started, and give you a reference for everything else you experiment with.
