4 Gear Attraction Motor- Complex

While playing with the Tinman inspired rigs, I wanted to make the rotors spin the same way so I can evaluate and think on it.  And I see this idea popping out..

It uses 4 geared rotors, 2 magnets on each gear rotor, and all magnets attract.  The idea is to let the rotors attract, and in doing so, they always bring another magnet into alignment to attract. As soon as they attract, the next 2 pairs are in attraction distance. This happens on 2 sides, all 4 rotors sequenced to induce rotation at every step in the cycle / repeating.

This idea is untested and preliminary. So this video is NOT listed.  Meaning only viewable if you know the link.

What do you think?

At the 45 second mark you put your finger to show the attraction, I think you may need a very thin shield in there to aid the hand off of the top rotor magnet from right to left. Also it looks a little sticky between left and right, maybe another thin shield between left and right to give it breathing space to catch the next attraction.

It looks promising - maybe a little extra weight on the rotors so intertia can play its part too?

I am hoping no shield needed. The simple 3 rotors are not aligned properly. It would be a perfect square to keep all 90 degree angles aligned properly. 

Watch the "Overthrow" that occurs at about the 30 second timing. Now we would have both sides overthrowing all geared together. I am thinking if the alignment and geometry was correct, the overthrow from the inertia combined with the next magnets could continue the motion by pulling it into the next  alignment.  The gear configuration transfers the gained inertia into kinetic energy which assists the rotation into the next alignment, repeating. 

I can not see the whole chain of events yet until I get 2 more rotors printed. Then I will know more.  This is just a preliminary thought at the moment that will probably be tweaked..

I just wish I knew how to simulate magnetic interactions!

Getting there..

Designing so I can use 2 or 4 magnets on each rotor. And easily change magnet polarities to test.



Late tonight or tomorrow I will have something to share.  No expectations- only hopes...

Good work as usual. All builds are a success in getting us closer to a working model no matter how far the build gets.

Do you think adding some flywheel weight might help get post any sticky spots?

Maybe, probably would help.  Honestly, this is like exploratory surgery. So many variations possible here.  2 sets of rotors are interacting the same way, 2 sets are interacting opposite ways. 

Not sure i what I will see here. Can I create a pattern where the rotors are always trying to align but can never quite get there?  Maybe!

Brilliant work! This is definitely a worthwhile idea and clever approach and you explained it very well in the vid. Also I agree in that adding a flywheel would be beneficial to maintain that overthrow momemtum and get past any points where it wants to get pulled backwards. Will let you know once I am able to experiment again. Keep it up! Btw love how smoothly your gears turn you got them perfectly designed.
