Lisa Hall was in a car accident - hit by a drunk driver. She could not work because of the injuries she sustained in the accident and she was laid off from work. Like so many other Americans her health care insurance was tied to her job which no longer exists, and therefore her insurance no longer exists. Get the picture? With her job gone she lost her insurance, and after the COBRA benefits ran out, the medical bills just started to pile up because without insurance who is really going to pay them? A laid off worker? Even if she could afford to pay the premiums no insurance company will cover her due to "pre-existing conditions". Ultimately, she goes into bankruptcy, like so many others…
This in a nutshell is the health care situation in America, and it is never going to change without the mobilization of the American people. Why? Because the health care system in America was brought to you by the same people who brought you the Iraq war. Lobbyists, think tanks, and large corporations. No other advanced country in the world will tolerate the conditions that we live with every day in this country. A fight is brewing
Health care activists disrupt Senate Finance Committee hearing
Some health care activists disrupted a Senate Finance Committee hearing Today, standing up one after another as the Chairman Max Baucus a Democrat from Montana tried to restore order. As soon as police escorted one protester out of the room, another would stand up, criticizing the committee for convening a panel of 15 experts and excluding witnesses who support creating a Medicare system for all Americans. About eight were led out of the hearing. “We need more police,” Baucus said.
This hearing will look into the public plan option. Activists are writing messages on why such a plan is critical and Senator John Kerry will read some of them into the record at the hearing. The question is: Why is it that big pharmacutical companies, HMO's, and insurance executives have a seat at the table for this process, but not anyone at all who advocates a single payer system? The answer is that the people who would benefit the most from radical health care reform do not have the money to pay lobbyists or contribute to the campaigns of politicians who are involved in these hearings.
Why we need activists to drive the debate and not corrupt politicians
Consumer Watchdog.org has revealed that politicians in Washington have received multimillion dollar donations from drug and health insurance companies. Acording to consumer watchdog.org, a nonpartisan and non-profit organization, the health care industry contributed more than $5 million to the top 10 recipients in Congress during the last two election campaigns. Are you going to get a fair debate about the one thing that can drive your family into bankruptcy? It turns out that those recipients received $2.2 million from health insurers and $3.3 million from drug manufacturers.
So far health insurers and drug manufacturers have contributed more than 24 million dollars to the current members of the Senate and House of Representatives since 2005. The top recipient is of course the Chairman Of The Committee Senator Max Baucus.
