FTP stands for file transfer protocol and the use of an FTP client is mandatory when building websites these days. An FTP client is a program that you install on your home computer which allows you to connect to a server which is responsible for holding that files that make your website visible on the world wide web.

There are many FTP clients to choose from. Some of the choices cost money and some are free. But when it comes to selecting a good FTP client, don't think paid ones are any better than some free options. My favorite FTP client is called Filezilla and is available for free. Filezilla is a great program which works smoothly and easily. Just do a Google search for Filezilla and you should be up and going in no time.

Before you can use an FTP program, you will need a server or webspace first. The server you select will be knows as your web host because it is actually hosting the files and serving them (which makes your website visible). Again, there are many free web hosts available, but if you plan on making a big website you should probably go with a paid web host. A hosting service does not need to be expensive but it must be reliable. If you look around the web, you will see hosting can be purchased for a few dollars a month to a few hundred dollars a month (depending on your needs).

Once you register for a hosting service, you will receive your FTP connection settings. Open Filezilla and under the "file" menu, you want to access the site manager. Procees to select the "New Site" option and name the entry according to your website. On the right hand side, under the general settings, you will need to enter the information for your hosting account. These fields are mandatory:

1. Host- Enter your domain. (example: www.mooker.com)
2. Server Type- Leave this on FTP
3. Logon Type- Use the dropdown to select "Normal"
4. User- Your hosting service username
5. Password- Your Hosting Service Password

After you enter all this information, Filezilla should save these settings so next time you can connect without hassles. Click the "Connect" button and the Filezilla FTP client should connect to your web host. The left hand side is your computer and the right is the web host. Simply drag and drop files from your computer to the server through the FTP client.

Most web servers require you to upload your files that will be displayed in to the public_html folder. When you connect your FTP client with Filezilla, you will usually see a folder called public_html on the right side. Open that folder and drop your webpages inside that folder.

The first file you upload (the homepage of your site) is usually called "index.html." Most web servers look for the index page to display first. So www.yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.com/index.html will probably both go to the exact same page. But this is not set in stone. Many times a webmaster may use a .php extension for scripting reasons, so in this case index.php will be the first page. But webpage extensions aren't limited to these two options. There are also .asp, .shtml, .cgi, and more. You will learn more about these extensions as you progress, but for most simple static pages, .html is used.

Finally, check your work after you use the FTP client to upload. Your published works should be available for viewing immediately after you transfer them to the host. Simply open your browser and visit your website to see the page in full effect.
