“I’ve never been a fan of ‘Star Trek,’”  says J. J. Abrams the director of the newest Star Trek movie who boldly goes where no film director has gone before.

The new "Star Trek" film comes out Friday and is another prequel that takes place before the events of the first movies.  There are some hard-core Trek fans that have been skeptical about the movie.  Their concern is the potential for ruination of the beloved franchise that took 40 years to buld.  The first blond James Bond introduced in 2006's succeeded, and broke new ground on an old franchise, and the movie "Batman Begins" electrified hard-core Batman fans the world over.  So there is precedent for this kind of thing working out.  The lastest Star Trek movie seems to have a good vibe about it if you take the temperature of the fans, and it needed it.

The Star Trek movies had reached a dead end, and the franchise needed some new young talent with a new perspective.  Fans of the original television series will argue that the TV series was more intelligent in a Twilight Zone sort of way.  It was groundbreaking science fiction which forced people to think, and there were morals as in Asops Fables.  The newest Star Trek film has a time-travel plot featuring the presence of Leonard Nimoy as an aged Spock.

The Star Trek series subverted America's cynical Cold War culture with its rich vision of a peaceful future and a weird, wonderful universe worthy of exploration. But since the box office peak of the original film series in 1986 (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home), the Trek brand has sort of devolved into a mess of cultural mesages.  Since Comic Con 2007 one of the greatest sources of comfort for Trek fans was knowing that Leonard Nimoy had decided to come out of retirement for this new Star Trek.

Paramount, the studio behind "Star Trek," has already given the green light to the next film in the series and has signed Abrams to produce it, an indication, perhaps, of the high hopes they have for this film.
