It seems to be so that Oscar winner Sean Penn has agreed to play Larry in The Three Stooges, according to Variety Magazine. Jim Carrey is reported to be in negotiations for the part of Curly Howard the bald headed brother of Moe Howard. According to reports Jim Carrey is preparing to gain 40 pounds so he can play the role of the chubby comic actor. Fans of the Stoogies will be: delighted, shocked, amused, (appalled?) to learn that Benicio Del Toro has been selected to play the chronically abusive Moe.

Sean Penn if you remember excelled as stoned surfer dude "Jeff Spicoli" in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" back in the day, but damn it, could he be a credible Stooge? Production is supposed to start in early fall for release sometime in 2010. Accordingly, this project is not expected to be a biopic but rather a comedy very much the way the Three Stooges themselves would have made back in the day.

Some fans of the Stooges actually prefer Shemp over Curly. What is not commonly known about them is that while the trio were filming "Half-Wits Holiday" Curly suffered a stroke and could not work anymore. The others convinced Shemp, who was actually an original Stooge before Curly made the scene, to take Curly's place and return to the role he once had. Though Shemp agreed, he did with the understanding that he could get out just as soon as Curly was ready to come back to work again. That never happened. Curly's health continued to fail, and he finally passed away in 1952. Shemp continued as a Stooge until his own death three years later.
