Kentucky Fried Chicken's latest advertising stunt blew up in their face as they upset many loyal customers throughout several states with broken promises. KFC and Oprah Winfrey combined efforts and gave away a free coupon for a two piece chicken meal. As it turns out, KFC was not prepared for the power of Oprah, and the 24 hour Internet coupon caused more havoc than KFC was prepared for.

Lines were long and employees were tense as crowds of people swarmed local KFC's nationwide to receive their free chicken dinner. Within a few hours many KFC locations were hanging signs on their doors in attempts to deny coupon holders their meal. Some locations were not accepting coupons at all as other locations were refusing to accept certain coupons that were printed in black and white.

Some KFC locations were handing out forms to coupon holding customers and instructing them to staple their coupon to the form once it was filled out. KFC will then issue than a rain date where they can receive their free meal. In some cases, it has been reported that KFC was even offering free soft drinks on the rain date to make up for the burden.

Law officials are currently looking into the matter to determine if false advertising was at play. KFC has since apologized for their shortcomings and hopes this tragic advertising failure will not impede future profits.

I suppose, the lesson to be learned is: if you are planning mass advertisement, make sure you can handle the workload.
