This illegal cloning work was carried out at a secret laboratory which is said to be located in the Middle East. Transferring cloned embryos into a woman's womb is illegal and poses a criminal punishment in Britain and most other countries around the world.
Dr. Zavos has fertility clinics in Kentucky and Cyprus. The four women who agreed to carry cloned babies consist of three married couples and a single woman who came from Britain, the USA, and somewhere in the Middle East.
Although Dr. Zavos said he implanted embryos in these four women, none of the embryos resulted in pregnancy. Dr. Zavos's is long-term goal is to produce cloned babies from skin cells of their parents.
"There is absolutely no doubt about it, and I may not be the one that does it, but the cloned child is coming. There is absolutely no way that it will not happen. If we intensify our efforts we can have a cloned baby within a year or two, but I don't know whether we can intensify our efforts to that extent. We are not really under pressure to deliver a cloned baby to this world. What we are under pressure to do is to deliver a cloned baby that is a healthy one," said doctor Zavos.
Even though mainstream fertility scientists are against Dr. Zavos's intentions, many couples still approached Dr. Zavos in hopes that he will help them in conceiving a cloned baby, similarly to the technique that was used to create Dolly the sheep in 1996.
Cloning sheep's has underwent many ups and downs and although there have been failed attempts the cloning process of animals is becoming more refined. the true question is: is cloning safe enough for humans yet?
