8 Killed in a Shooting At Carthage, NC Nursing Home

Pine Lake nursing home specializes in treatmet of Alzheimer's patients.  Early this morning it was the scene of a shooting that left 8 dead.  A gunman indentified as Robert Stewart opened fire at a nursing home in Carthage, N.C., on Sunday morning killing a nurse and seven patients.  Injured at the scene were at least two others including a police officer, city officials said.

According to Carthage Police Chief Chris McKenzie, the gunman walked into the 90-bed nursing home facility and opened fire.  The suspect was wounded and apprehended at the scene.  Injured victims were taken to First Health Moore Regional Hospital.  One person was rushed into surgery and another was released.  Others were still treated at the scene.  Very few details about the attack, including motive have been released so far.

This is the third multiple shooting incident that has taken place in the southeast in the past month.  Bernard Bryant, the Pinelake administrator declined an interview.  Asked for a statement he responded with:  “Our concerns are with our residents, our families and our staff,”.

 A police press conference is planned for 5:00 p.m. ET.
