Since all internet service providers offer free email accounts with their services most people take advantage of it and start using their isp's email account right away. But there are some things you should be aware of before you make the decision of what email service to use.
If you have Comcast, Verizon, AOL, Earthlink, MSN, or any other internet provider, it may be a wise idea to use an alternative email account rather than use the one that is provided by your isp. Reason being, you may change your ips someday and when you do, you lose all your emails. I see it too often, I go to a home for a routine service call and the customer is in a frenzy trying to salvage all the old emails and address books. Avoid this trouble by electing a third party email account.
Sure you may think "I have no plan on switching internet service providers", but you never know what can happen. And when the day comes and you switch providers, you now have to change your email account. This can become a big burden if you have a large contact book and lots of emails to save.
A better option is to sign up for a free online service such as Yahoo or Gmail. After all, Google rules the internet so trusting them with your email accounts shouldn't be a big deal. The advantages of using a service like www.gmail.com is that you can keep your free email account forever, you can check your email on any computer in the world, and the features Gmail offers are unmatched. You can incorporate chat, instant messaging, tasks, calendars, video mail, and much more that your current providers email may not support.
Thinking one step ahead may save you hours of fustration later on.
